The Origin of Techno-Boy Part 1

In all honesty, the beginnings of Techno-Boy really begin with who I am and to a certain extent, who I was.

In the Fall of 1989, I started my freshman year at Temple University in Philadelphia, majoring in Radio-Television-Film (RTF).

Growing up, I was inundated with pop culture and I absorbed it like a sponge. I loved old movies, comics, and music. I felt like I needed to know everything about what I was interested in. From super-heroes to movie monsters to special effects, I voraciously consumed anything that I could read or watch.

My freshman year consisted of primarily lecture classes when it came to the RTF program.

A year later, I started my sophomore year with a teacher's strike, which as a result, eliminated most of our winter break. When classes started in October, I took my first production class, RTF 101.

It was enormously fun, yet my interests in pop culture (and parody) dominated all of my work. That first semester I made the films Super Dude, Edward Spatulahands and an adaptation of a scene from Watchmen.

All arrived with an appropriate thud. The year concluded with two shorts shot on film, one featuring a man who could run fast and the other, a rip-off of the Fisher King several months before it was released.

My group of friends rebelled a bit around the school's reputation of documentary filmmaking. When we signed up for the class Experimental Video in the Fall of 1991, we had little interest in experimenting. We just wanted to make stuff. Our idea of experimental was converting the video from color to black and white.

For my final in the class I knew I wanted to make something impressive.

Thus began my idea for Superman Vs. Godzilla.
